*An action/ reaction cycle with bee collaborators.* 2016–2017 Input:
a wooden Langstroth beehive made from instructions found on the internet
letterpress + honeycomb collaborations
paper and wax crumbles
Bees eat the paper, grind it up and remove it from the hive piece-meal like little iconoclasts, or build comb on top of the prints, modifying formal compositions with monochrome relief encaustic. Their additions connect the prints face-to-face (cross-comb). I can no longer pull the frames out one by one and pretend that I am the one keeping them. I try to make sure they'll survive through the winter, observe their comings and goings and worry about whether the queen is still alive. Maybe next summer I will harvest some honey full of paper-bits to consume our work (mine and theirs).
